Entering this year, just three high school basketball players have ever scored more than 5,000 points in a career. Alabama's Tommy Murr has now joined that exclusive list.

Murr, a senior at Lindsay Lane Christian School in Athens, Alabama, finished his career earlier this month with a state-record 5,716 points. That total, when approved by the Alabama High School Athletic Association, ranks second all time, behind only Louisiana's Greg Procell who scored 6,702 points from 1967-70.

Murr set a new AHSAA single-season scoring record by scoring 1,506 points this season – breaking his record of 1,442 set last season – after setting the new career record earlier this season. He broke the record of 4,555 points set by Parkway Christian’s Jeremy Monceaux from 1998-2002, according to the AHSAA’s online record book.

“I am thankful for how God has blessed our school, this team and myself as an individual,” Murr said. “I am thankful for the healthy career I had. I am thankful for the friendships and bonds I was able to build with some of my best friends. To have been coached by my father and the best coaches a kick could ask for ... I will forever cherish my high school career.”

Murr averaged 44.3 points per game this season and 31.6 in 181 career AHSAA games.

Murr ended his career as the AHSAA’s all-time leading scorer by more than 1,000 points.

Murr will play next year at Lipscomb University.
