This spring, Rockdale County (Georgia) High School sophomore Candace Hill astounded the crowds at the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Class 6A Track and Field Championships by winning both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash in state-record times. Her time of 23.05 seconds in the 200 was the best in the nation this year, while her mark of 11.34 in the 100 was third among high schoolers in competition sanctioned by state associations.
However, what nobody saw coming was her run of 10.98 in the 100 this month at the Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle, making her the first high school girl to break 11 seconds in the event. At just 16 years old, Hill is the fourth fastest American woman this year, and would have placed in seventh in the 2012 Olympic final. While her incredible time does not qualify for the NFHS High School Sports Record Book because it occurred outside of Georgia’s high school season, Hill will look to leave her mark in it during her remaining two years of high school.
Earlier this week, Hill was named 2014-15 Gatorade Athlete of the Year.
