Nevada high jumper continues to make history

Some description

The children of superstar athletes are often expected to do great things. With the unique athletic abilities inherited from their parents, elite athletes like Ken Griffey Jr., Laila Ali and Peyton Manning all followed in the footsteps of their fathers. However, Vashti Cunningham, a track and field star at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, is forging her own path.

Vashti, the daughter of former NFL all-pro quarterback Randall Cunningham, is a dominant high jumper and long jumper for the Gaels. This past spring, she cleared an incredible 6-4¼ feet in the high jump at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California. That performance, if approved by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) would be the national record.

Later in the season, Cunningham cleared 6-4 at the NIAA Division 1 Southern Regional Finals, earning her a share of the previous top spot with Del City’s (Oklahoma) Toni Young in the NFHS High School Sports Record Book.

Then this August, Cunningham stunned the crowds once again with an unprecedented jump of 6-5 at the Pan American Junior Championships in Edmonton, Canada. What is most impressive is that Cunningham is still just 17 years-old and will enter her senior year at Bishop Gorman this fall.

While her marks Pan American Junior Championships do not qualify for the High School Sports Record Book because they occurred outside of Nevada’s high school season, Cunningham will look to place her name atop the all-time rankings during her remaining year of high school.
