For more than a year, Connellsville High School’s Madison Wiltrout has been the best girls javelin thrower in the state of Pennsylvania. However, she is now undoubtedly the best in the nation, and maybe even the best female high school thrower in history. It is quite the impressive résumé for a sophomore.

On May 14, in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League 3A Central Regional qualifier, Wiltrout hurled an astonishing 185-8, setting a new girls national high school record by more than four feet, pending state association approval. She would go on to win her second straight Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) state title with a throw of 182-8, one she made into the wind. That throw eclipsed the previous PIAA state finals record of 158-0 set in 2004, and was a remarkable improvement on her 151-1 from a year earlier. Already getting college offers, Wiltrout will surely continue to amaze crowds for years to come.
