At the 2014 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) State Swimming Meet, Beata Nelson took to the water with a national record in her sights. Nelson, ajunior from the Verona Area/Mount Horeb team, led from start to finish from lane four to capture the 100-yard butterfly state final.

In the process, Nelson's time broke the national record in the event set in 2014 by Kathryn McLaughlin of Rancho Santa Margarita, California. Pending approval by the WIAA, her time of :51.70 will sit atop the national rankings in the National High School Sports Record Book.

It won't be the first time Nelson's name is listed in the book. Last year, she swam a :52.06 race to which ranked third all time in the event. At the state level, Nelson now holds three state records. She already held the 50-yard freestyle record and 100-yard backstroke record as well.

Nelson's win helped the Verona Area/Mount Horeb girls swimming team earn a fourth-place finish at the state finals.
